Airlift is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language action drama film written and directed by Raja Krishna Menon. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur. It was released on 22 January 2016 in India, followed by the United States on 23 January 2016. It is based on the true events of the evacuation of Indians stuck in Kuwait during Iraq's 1990 invasion. This movie tells how people with money found safe passage to foreign lands with all their assets intact while hundreds of thousands of Indians were left behind to face death or slavery. The film, based on a book by Bhargav Krishna, follows Ranjit Katiyal (Akshay Kumar), a businessman living in Kuwait with his wife and two children, who finds himself stranded in the Middle Eastern nation after Iraq invades. Produced by Kumar's company Hari Om Entertainment and Walt Disney Pictures, the film marks the Bollywood debut of Pakistani actress Nimrat Kaur. It is inspired from true events that took place during Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. In December 2015, it was announced that the film would be released on 11 January 2016. Upon the announcement, Menon told "The Hindu", "We have shot in a foreign land and many people do not realise that Indians have been there for years. I hope people who see the movie will have a better understanding." Ranjit Katiyal (Akshay Kumar) is a well-mannered businessman living in Kuwait with his wife Shruti (Nimrat Kaur), two children and their maid. Ranjit's sudden death leads to Shruti filing for divorce, which she gets promptly granted by the court. This leads to Shruti sharing custody of their daughter with her ex-husband Vikram (played by Nimrat Kaur). Shruti also files for divorce from Ranjit and moves on with Vikram. Five years later, Ranjit has since remarried Meena (Asin Thottumkal) and has a new son and daughter with her. He is reluctant to let his children go on a vacation to India. When the family discover that the Kuwaiti government has provided refuge for Indians on Indian passports, they discover that their own paperwork does not permit them to enter India as they feel that such a travel plan would be unsafe as the western media is portraying Kuwait as unsafe at that time. On 22 December 2015, Krishna Menon was briefly hospitalized after suffering from dehydration and exhaustion after directing the film's first version. The film was shot in locations in Kuwait, Dubai, Mumbai and Pune. The scenes shot in Pune were said to be filmed in the city of Yerawada. The film's story is inspired by the real-life Kuwaiti businessman Ranjit Katiyal who smuggled Indians to safety during the Persian Gulf War. The film was released on 22 January 2016. "Airlift" released on 200 screens worldwide, where it grossed $3 million (₹20 crore) worldwide over its opening weekend (2-6 February 2016) India. On Monday (8 February 2016), that number went up to $4 million (₹24 crore).
